A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting power. A coupling can be rigid or, more normally, it can be flexible allowing relative radial, axial or angular movement of the two shafts. The coupling transmission is not designed to engage-disengage as a normal operation. Couplings do not normally allow disconnection of shafts during operation, though there do exist torque limiting couplings which can slip or disconnect when some torque limit is exceeded. The primary purpose of couplings is to join two pieces of rotating equipment while permitting some degree of misalignment or end movement or both. By careful selection, installation and maintenance of couplings, substantial savings can be made in reduced maintenance costs and downtime.

Rotex jaw type couplings are characterised by small dimensions, light weight and low mass moments of inertia yet transmit high torques. The running quality and service life of the coupling are improved by accurate all-over machining. Their application is ideal for transmitting torque while damping torsional vibrations and absorbing shocks produced by the uneven operation of certain prime movers. Rotex are torsionally flexible and designed for positive torque transmission, and they are fail-safe. Operational vibrations and shocks are efficiently dampened and reduced, and two congruent coupling halves with concave claws on the inside are peripherally offset in relation to one another by half a pitch. They are designed to enable an involute spider to be located between them. These couplings are capable of compensating for axial, radial and angular displacements of the shafts that are connected. The maximum torsion angle amounts to 5°, and they can be fitted both horizontally or vertically. The flexible teeth of rotex products are subject to pressure only, and this gives the advantage of the individual teeth being ability to withstand considerably higher loads. The elastomer parts show deformation with excessive loads and speeds, so sufficient space for expansion should be given.

Muff Couplings are long cylindrical coupling bored and keyed to fit over both shafts. These are split axially and clamped over both shafts with recessed bolts.

Ruland Rigid Coupling is available in one and two-piece designs, with and without keyways, in aluminum, carbon steel, and stainless steel. A large number of standard sizes are available in straight and step bore combinations to fit shafts ranging in the inch series and in the metric series. Inch to metric conversion couplings is also available by special order. Each rigid coupling is stamped with the Ruland name and the bore sizes for easy identification.
The one-piece rigid coupling wraps around the shaft, providing high torsional holding power without the shaft damage and fretting inherent when set screw style couplings are used. The two-piece rigid coupling has the additional benefit of allowing for disassembly and maintenance without removal of other components. The two-piece design also features opposing hardware for dynamic balancing.
Extra steps are taken in the manufacture of rigid couplings to provide important performance benefits. As one of these steps, the bores of Ruland straight bore rigid shaft couplings are precision honed. Honing of the bores provides several benefits that enhance the overall performance of the rigid coupling. Applications that require strict control of shaft alignment benefit greatly from honing, which assures both bores are collinear. Honing also corrects any residual distortions caused by stresses introduced during the manufacturing process, resulting in around, precisely sized bore. Rigid couplings come with Ruland's unique Nypatch® socket head cap screws for increased performance and reliability. Nypatch® is a proprietary process that involves depositing a 360-degree coating of Nylon on several threads of the socket head cap screws. This coating is designed to reduce screw vibration, which can cause the screws to loosen and torque transmission ability to diminish during the course of normal use. The Nylon also provides the necessary dissimilar material to reduce galling of the screw threads in stainless steel rigid couplings.
Double wide shaft collars are an excellent alternative to rigid shaft couplings in applications where space is limited. The double-wide shaft collar has a reduced torque capability compared to the rigid coupling due to its use of a single socket head cap screw per shaft. However, the compact size of the collar reduces inertia making it ideal for motion control applications.
The benefits of using rigid shaft couplings include their economy, high torque capacity, and zero backlashes. Rigid couplings are suitable for applications when misalignment is neither present nor desired, including connecting line-shafting or attaching a motor to a gearbox.

A Nuteck Gear Coupling is a mechanical device for transmitting torque between two shafts that are not collinear. It consists of a flexible joint fixed to each shaft. The two joints are connected by a third shaft, called the spindle.
Each joint consists of a 1:1 gear ratio internal/external gear pair. The tooth flanks and the outer diameter of the external gear are crowned to allow for angular displacement between the two gears. Mechanically, the gears are equivalent to rotating splines with modified profiles. They are called gears because of the relatively large size of the teeth.
Gear couplings and universal joints are used in similar applications. Gear couplings have higher torque densities than universal joints designed to fit a given space while universal joints induce lower vibrations. The limit on torque density in universal joints is due to the limited cross-section of the cross and yoke. The gear teeth in a gear coupling have a high backlash to allow for angular misalignment. The excess backlash can contribute to vibration.
